A mutual fund is a pool of money contributed by many people and invested on their behalf by a professional money manager.

Why invest in mutual funds?

Mutual funds have a number of benefits:

Fund managers, supported by a team of researchers, are devoted to understanding investment markets, analyzing securities and implementing investment strategies to manage mutual funds.

· Diversification:

Mutual funds offer a level of diversification that can't be matched by other investments. By investing in a variety of stocks, bonds and other holdings, mutual funds make it easy for an investor to create a balanced and diversified investment portfolio.

· Convenience:

Mutual fund companies do much of the paperwork associated with investing (annual reports, statements).

What is the minimum I can invest in mutual funds?

The minimum investment varies between companies and types of plans. You can usually purchase most funds for an initial investment of between $500 and $1,000. Thereafter, many funds also allow regular contibutions (e.g., monthly) of as little as $25 per month.

Can I sell my mutual funds?

You can sell your mutual funds at any time. Depending upon the company with whom you have invested, and the type of fund, there may or may not be a charge.

How is the price of a mutual fund determined?

The value of each unit or share of a mutual fund is determined by taking the total value of the assets of the fund, subtracting the liabilities and then dividing by the total number of units outstanding. For example, if a fund has assets of $100 million, liabilities of $4 million and total units outstanding of $6 million, the net asset value (NAV) would be $16 per unit.
