Driving the next generation of business leaders forward

From classroom to the community, Enactus Canada gives students a platform to implement positive social change through the lens of entrepreneurship.

Inspiring and driving the next generation of business leaders forward

There are many opportunities to learn while attending school. And in over 70 schools across the nation, students have access to extra knowledge when looking for an entrepreneurial advantage thanks to Enactus Canada.

Enactus is an experiential learning platform that helps students unleash their entrepreneurial spirit and develop the skills and perspective essential to leadership in our ever-changing world, and apply that learning within their communities. At regional and national events held each year, students demonstrate how their community empowerment projects and business ventures are shaping the economic, social and environmental landscape of Canada through a variety of competition platforms.

“Enactus encourages students to take what they learn in the classroom and then apply that in the community,” says Nicole Almond, President of Enactus Canada. “We host a series of competitions throughout the year. Just as in for-profit business, we’ve found that not-for-profit competition also drives excellence. Our students are really competitive!”

Sharing a focus on building leaders

CWB and Enactus Canada’s partnership first began last year with the bank wanting to take a more proactive approach to help build business leaders in Canada. And after the first regional event in Calgary, CWB quickly realized the power of the programs offered by Enactus Canada. After seeing firsthand the incredible potential within the participants, CWB has increased their engagement this year, and will be hosting their first national challenge in 2019. The CWB Financial Education Challenge empowers Enactus teams to identify, create and deliver projects that address the specific and unique financial education needs and opportunities in their communities with the aim of improving livelihoods. The CWB Financial Education Challenge came as a natural fit to support as the bank also works to provide financial education and flexible solutions to clients and business owners across Canada.

While CWB’s challenge is financially focused, projects coming out of Enactus Canada can take a variety of shapes and forms. Over the past two years, student projects have addressed food insecurity in some of Canada’s harshest climates through the use of hydroponics, created transitional employment opportunities for victims of trafficking, taught elementary students the power of financial education and literacy, as well as worked with at-risk youth to teach them valuable life skills to build a more financially secure future. And Enactus couldn’t do that important work without the support of partners like CWB, as the majority of what they do depends on corporate funding.

Building on a foundation of success from within

The power of Enactus Canada is easy to see, from within their very organization as well. Approximately 75 per cent of employees are former Enactus program participants, including President Nicole Almond. Enactus hopes to spread their message and programs even further throughout the country for years to come. “Enactus Canada has been around for over 30 years with a couple of different names, but the work we’re doing is consistent,” says Nicole.

“We’re one of Canada’s best kept secrets. I wish people could see the stories of our students and the impact they’re having.”

CWB is proud to partner with and sponsor a program supporting the next generation of leaders, and we look forward to the future these students are building. Learn more about CWB’s commitment to community investment
