Finding Balance: Doing what you love

David Nisbet finds balance as Managing Director of Aurora, Ontario’s St. Andrew’s Valley Golf Club through passion for both his family and business.

Set in the picturesque landscape of Aurora, Ontario - only a half-hour drive north of Toronto - St. Andrew's Valley Golf Club is one of Canada's top golfing destinations. It features an 18-hole golf course, as well as amenities that include a 2,000 square foot putting green and a large clubhouse featuring fine dining and panoramic views.

Continuing a family business legacy

Having been raised in the family business, Managing Partner, David Nisbet, remembers back to when his grandfather first started the Aurora Highlands Golf Course and how that legacy has continued over the years. "It's a business of character within the community," he adds. "The property ends up becoming something special and a focal point for the community."

"It's all I've ever known, so the idea of waking up and not thinking about it is unfathomable."

St. Andrew's Valley Golf Club was a second location in a series of courses that the company imagined would service the Toronto area. "We had an opportunity to develop land in Aurora, and we had a certain amount of expectation as a go-to source for golf development because of our business history, he says."

Reaching an equilibrium in work-life balance

For David, golfing is in his blood and is a way life. And he wouldn't have it any other way. "It's all I've ever known, so the idea of waking up and not thinking about it is unfathomable," he quips. In many ways, it's become a definition of self for both him and his wife, who's also from the golf club business."

Although finding work-life balance can be a challenge, David and his family have found ways to make it work for them. "It's a delightful trap, and people are happy," he notes. And he credits his wife's empathy and tolerance for helping them reach that feeling of contentment and equilibrium."

Building a trusted relationship with CWB Maxium Financial

When it comes to finding a financial institution with whom he can build a relationship, David found that at CWB Maxium Financial. He particularly values the trust that has built over time with the employees, who have remained over the long-term, including Tim Trimper, Vice President of Golf for CWB Maxium Financial. "The continuity in the employees has been awesome," he says. "I just get on the phone, and they know as much about the asset as I do, so they also understand the value and the cost."
